During the KEY ENERGY – ECOMONDO event at Rimini Fiere (October 27^th 2021), the XXIII Ecohitech edition of the historic Italian recognition to the excellence of companies and public bodies for the development of innovative solutions and projects for the green and digital transition of cities has been awarded, during a conference dedicated to Next Generation Cities.

The Ecohitech path was born from the historic Ecohitech Award (born in 1998), with a series of events aimed at enhancing innovative projects, solutions and technologies of companies and public bodies that have achieved concrete results in various areas of the smart city: Environmental sustainability / green transition; Energy transition; Digital transition / digitization; Improvement of services to citizens.

In 2021, in the category dedicated to the digitization of Public Administrations, some important awards were assigned and a special mention went to the Municipality of Milan and to the Merezzate+ project with this reason: “for the design of a neighbourhood that sees its pillars in clean energy, digitalization, the circular economy and sustainable mobility and which proves to have a strong social and environmental impact on the territory“.

On the morning of Wednesday 29th September Merezzate+ was presented as a best practice at the meeting “Carbon Neutral City: from buzz to action”.

The event presents some of the Milan innovative experiences of district-based solutions as a Carbon Neutral city facing climate change and promoting urban regeneration, mobilizing all key players and providing for a broad involvement of civil society, private sector, public administrations and research.

The event was organised in roundtables, starting from the Milano experiences and scaling to an international perspective.

A goal of the event is to produce a “lessons learned notice” on Climate neutral and Smart Cities, useful for sharing the experiences of Milan and to propose models to other urban areas for the successful engagement of citizens, policy makers, Public Administrations and Real Estate operators.

The meeting was scheduled as follow:

The event was organised by Consorzio Poliedra, Politecnico di Milano, REDO sgr, the Municiplity of Milan, AMAT, with the contribution of EIT-Climate KIC and the collaboration of the Ecological Transition Ministry, Lendlease, “100 Neutral Cities” and “C40 Cities” networks.

The initiative was part of the All4Climate program, organised by the Ecological Transition Ministry and te World Bank program “Connect4Climate”, together with Lombardy Region, the Municipality of Milan and is part of pre-COP: a 40-country ministry meeting in Milan hold one month before the COP26, with the aim of having a preliminary debate about climate issue.

The meeting is done in collaboration with SP2021 – Sustainable Places IX edition, held in Rome form 28^th September to 1^st October.

Thanks to a two days on-site distribution, all the Smart Plug devices made available for free thanks to Merezzate+ innovative project have been distributed to the people living in REDO Merezzate.

What is a Smart Plug? Smart Plugs are intelligent devices that helps to be more aware in the management of the energy consumption of the individual household appliances. Each device monitors consumption and, through the LoraWan wireless network, allows remotely to switch on/off the individual appliance. This is the first step in a “demand response” logic.

What does the Smart Plug do? The Smart plug monitors specific energy consumption and allows, through the LORAWAN wireless network, remote control of the switching on/off of the single appliance. The switching on and off can be scheduled with the REDO Merezzate neighborhood APP, all in protected mode and available to the specific user only.

What is it for? Thanks to the acquired and managed information, it will be possible to “educate” one’s energy behavior to ensure the correct distribution of electrical loads (avoiding the use of multiple appliances simultaneously or during the peak hours with the highest rate): thanks to the Planet APP, the user can monitor, manage and plan its own energy consumption.

On June 12th an Amsa (the company in charge of waste collection in Milan) mobile recycling station was brought to REDO Merezzate to give the opportunity to people living there and in the surrounding neighbourhoods to collect their WEEE (Waste from Electrical and Electronic Equipment), without going to the landfill. In the morning, from 8.30 to 12.30, Merezzate+ team was there to welcome and talk about the project, Amsa team recommended how to recycle the items brought to the mobile recycling station and Erion (the Italian consortium that manages and recycles parts of the electronic waste) proposed a demonstration dedicated to the kids.

On March 27^th, during the first laboratory of the community start-up process, promoted by Fondazione Housing Sociale (FHS), the “Bicycle ride” group was founded by REDO’s inhabitants, collecting all the people who share the passion for cycling in the parks surrounding REDO Merezzate district.

Starting from autumn 2020, in the framework of Merezzate+ Sustainable Mobility pillar, different activities concerning cycling were launched:

• A webinar abut cycling in Milan, with some tricks from two expert cyclists of the city;
• The installation of 5 bicycle maintenance stands to support REDO Milano residents’ shift to cycling mobility;
• A workshop on bicycle maintenance, showing how to use the bicycle maintenance stands provided by Merezzate+ project.

To continue with these activities Merezzate+ and the “Bicycle ride” group, organized AbbracciaMI – REDO bicycle ride, involving Marco Mazzei, one of the experts of the webinar. On Saturday May 15^th with a path of about 10 kilometers, about 20 people of all ages left from REDO Merezzate to explore the south-east parks of Milan where they can have a picnic and explore the nature.
