Merezzate+ took part into ‘The Great Green Connector: Stronger together for climate action’ organised by EIT Climate-KIC to bring together the innovators and thought leaders of our current innovation portfolio (with circa 50 projects) and create a space to experience our inspiring EIT Climate-KIC community. This was a precious opportunity to benefit from practical insights of implementing innovation projects in the field of climate action.

The event consisted in a three-days meetings, organised as follow:

DAY 1 – 27 October 2020: A Bird’s Eye View of our Collective Climate Action

• Learn about what’s in the innovation portfolio, and how it maps against our key priorities for climate impact.
• Start engaging with other partners so that we organise ourselves for better impact.

DAY 2 – 3 November 2020: Portfolio Deep Dive 

• Discover other projects within our innovation portfolio that might be relevant to your work.
• Exchange on learnings with other partners working in your area of interest.
• Explore connections and potential collaborations within the portfolio.

DAY 3 – 17 November 2020: Open Space & Discussion 

• Pitch and discuss your challenges, issues and ideas for collaboration with other partners and discover potential synergies.
• Discuss with others how this portfolio can be moved forward and how it could convince external funders.

Merezzate+ is presented as a project impacting the following Goals:

1. Promote retrofit and decentralised energy: Drive a significant increase in urban retrofit rates and enable district-scale clean energy production, paving the way for deep cuts in emissions.
2. Nurture nature-based resilience for cities: Create more liveable, resilient cities through substantially increasing the introduction of nature-based solutions and enhancing natural systems.
3. Accelerate sustainable urban mobility: Trigger the switch to clean urban mobility to
   achieve considerable cuts in urban transport emissions.

Merezzate+ was engaged in the International E-waste day.

In the framework of the Circular Economy Pillar’s activities of Merezzate+ project, a two-step activity have been organised to sensitize citizens to the correct e-waste collection and disposal:

• A webinar (14^th October 2020), open to the Merezzate District residents (615 dwellings) and to the community living nearby, aimed at describing how to properly manage e-waste and, more in general, how to correctly deal with domestic waste.
• A dedicated e-waste collection event (in the next days) with a mobile recycling station for electrical and electronic waste. The collection event will take place in Merezzate District area and will be opened both for residents and people living in the adjoining neighbourhoods. Due to coronavirus pandmic, this even is rescheduled for Spring 2021.

The activity is promoted together with Erion (previously Ecodom and Remedia), in synergy with Inno-WEE Project, and AMSA. Merezzate+ is cofinanced within Climate-KIC Smart Sustainable Districts programme.

Fondazione Housing Sociale, together with REDO sgr, is recording a series of videos named “REDO Merezzate, racconti dal quartiere (stories from the neighbourhood)” to introduce the district to its future inhabitants. These videos are interviews to the stakeholders of Santa Giulia and Rogoredo districts, collecting different experiences and projects in the area where REDO Merezzate is located.

Mario Motta, Francesca Costa and Giuliana Gemini explain Merezzate+ pillars: Energy, Mobility and Circular Economy.

Mario Motta, the coordinator of the Merezzate+ project, tells us about the importance of the decarbonisation of cities and how Merezzate+ is helping REDO Merezzate, where the project is working, to become one of the Smart Sustainable District. Some punctual actions, developed in the Energy pillar, are provided to reduce the impact of the district such as low temperature and smart heating and cooling systems, control on electricity demand that can be done using the smart app, which informs the users about their energy behaviours.

Francesca Costa explains the sustainable mobility actions foreseen in the Mobility pillar. Starting from an analysis of the needs of the area, the Vision 2030 (a future mobility scenario) was designed with the aim to improve sustainable mobility and cycling in the area. Other actions that are going to be implemented in the pillar are the walking bus for primary school pupils, a series of webinar about cycling and a community car share system that is going to be co-designed and developed with REDO Merezzate inhabitants.

Co-designing is, as well, at the core of Circular Economy pillar and Giuliana Gemini explains us how it is going to be implemented. Merezzate+ has already proposed some activities on sustainable purchasing to do with the ethical purchasing groups approach and eco-friendly tricks to make moving more sustainable (with a dedicated guide made by AMSA) and it plans to do some more ones concerning vegetable gardens, waste management and fixing and re-using laboratories, involving local shops and companies that are going to locate in REDO Merezzate districts.

The smart app that Mario Motta mentioned in the first intervention is going to be used to support GaiaGo car share, to engage people proposing challenges about circular economy and mobility and to promote local events about Merezzate+ pillars.

The smart heating control that will be implemented in Merezzate+ project was presented in a scientific paper delivered to the national scientific journal AEIT (Associazione Italiana di Elettrotecnica, Elettronica, Automazione, Informatica e Telecomunicazioni).

The article is titled “Smart heating control nel nuovo distretto milanese REDO” and it is written by Rossano Scoccia, Ettore Zanetti, Giuseppe Dinnella, Fabrizio Tortonese, Alessandro Bartolini and Mario Motta.

The outcomes highlight that, thanks to the implementation of the Smart heating control, the expected reduction of energy consumption is higher than 10%, combined with the increase of user thermal comfort.

Merezzate+ project was presented as a success story which demonstrates how sustainability solutions can be adopted at the scale of an entire district through the creation of a ‘Living Lab’ in an affordable housing development.

Friday 29^th November, hosted in Politecnico di Milano Aula Magna, took place the periodic “Stakeholder updating meeting” of Merezzate+ project.

Almost 40 people participated among partners, third parties and stakeholders involved in the project activities.

The morning session has been the occasion to share and discuss the current status of Merezzate+ project with regard to the community involvement activities and the technical ones in each pillar (energy – mobility – circular economy).

In the afternoon, there have been three thematic working groups, dedicated to “The sustainable mobility vision 2030 for Merezzate+ area and neighbouring districts”, to “Merezzate+ circular district: from waste management to sustainable procurement” and to the dissemination and replication activities.

The 10th IALE World Congress (Milan, 1-5 July 2019), organized by the local Chapter SIEP – Italian Society of Landscape Ecology, is the international congress dedicated to Landscape Ecology, an international meeting opportunity for everyone working with landscape ecology or who has an interest in the field.    

IALE 2019, held by more than 1.000 participants, was dedicated to the theme “Nature and Society facing the Anthropocene” and it’s been a great opportunity to learn more about the latest in latest ecology, to discuss with people from all over the world, to share on going works and learn from others.

Friday 5th of July, in the morning, Giuliana Gemini – Consorzio Poliedra participated in the Symposium “Good anthropocene practices in contributing landscape ecology” with a speech entitled “Behavioral change towards sustainable and resilient communities. The role of community involvement, green co-design and gamification tools”, presenting Merezzate + project as a case study.

R2B (Research to Business) represents today one of the key events in Italy offering new multi-sectoral technologies and skills, research and innovation, but it also represents the right place to discover European and national policies for internationalisation and competitiveness. R2B is a “laboratory” in which innovation experiences connect according to the Model of Open Innovation and fostering the emergence of opportunities and new business among the various players in the ecosystem. R2B is promoted by the Emilia-Romagna and BolognaFiere Region, in collaboration with ART-ER – the new regional company for innovation and attractiveness of the territory, born from the merger of ASTER and ERVET – and SMAU.

In the context of the R2B Fair on 06/06/2019 in Bologna, Paolo Zancanella  (Politecnico di Milano) was invited to this event by AR-TER, to talk about the importance of co-planning and co-management for sustainability in social housing, bringing as a case study, the Merezzate+ project.

After a brief introduction on the purpose of the project, the description of the partners and the activities that will be developed, Paolo talked about community and engagement, the importance of the active participation of the residents and the relevance to define and develop together with the future residents the main activities for the community, (how to participate, identifying in which actions the future residents can be more involved and how these activities can be organized and managed by themselves). In addition to this, Paolo illustrated the path to be taken together with the future residents (from the publication of the calls to the meetings with those who have already submitted their application, the simulation of the project and finally how the assignment of the apartments will take place based on specific criteria. To conclude his speech, Paolo showed some examples of social cards prepared by FHS together with Poliedra that will be used in these meetings among the future tenants of Merezzate in order to identify, develop and plan together the main activities for the community.

The sustainable energies week represents today one of the key events in Milan to discuss on research and innovation on energy and climate issues.

In the context A2A Calore e Servizi on March 19, 2019 has organized in collaboration with Politecnico di Milano, Municipality of Milan and AMAT a workshop on the development in Milan of the innovative district heating technologies (IL CALORE SOSTENIBILE- Teleriscaldamento a bassa temperatura: nuovi sviluppi per la città di Milano)

Prof Mario Motta  (Politecnico di Milano) was invited to this event in order to share the experience of MEREZZATE + project

After a brief introduction on the purpose of the project, the description of the partners and the activities that will be developed,  Prof Motta focuses his intervention on the following items:

• The testing of a new low temperature district heating model in Merezzate+, which is the first plant of this type in Italy that is also used for summer cooling and it is an ideal solution for efficient clean energy production in our urban areas.
• The air conditioning and ventilation of selected environments realized through “Freescoo”, an innovative system mainly fed by the district heating network. The system will benefit from minimum power consumption compared to traditional air conditioning systems therefore gaining substantial savings on energy costs.
• The ICT tools for the control of thermal and electrical consumption of individual dwellings, allowing the tenants to monitor their behaviours in real time, ensuring autonomy in the management of comfort in indoor spaces and creating the conditions for a sensible energy consumption.
